TO PREPARE TO WRITE THE HAMLET ESSAY, review Aristotle’s Tragic Hero elements (which was discussed earlier in the trimester). -You must use the Aristotle’s TRAGIC HERO elements to form the basis of your thesis. You will provide a condensed version of THREE of these points to create your thesis. Be sure that you follow the format below when setting up your thesis. Your thesis will follow this format: Hamlet is a tragic hero because _________, ____________, and ________. –FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THIS DOCUMENT TO FORMAT YOUR ESSAY: HAMLET ALTERNATE ESSAYDownload HAMLET ALTERNATE ESSAY –When you cite quotes from the play in your essay, be sure to cite from the original text in the book and NOT from the translated modern version from the website. Follow this format: EXAMPLE QUOTES: Hamlet says, “Tis madness in the sense of being cray” (3.4.212). Ophelia screams, “My dress ’tis ripped and wet, you brute!” (4.3.122-23). ****Notice that quotes are introduced with the speaker’s name and separated with a comma before the quotation. If the quotation ends with a period, the period goes behind the parenthesis (first example above) and NOT before the parenthesis. If a quote ends with a question mark (?) or an exclamation mark (!), you will put that punctuation at the end of the sentence and still put a period behind the last parenthesis–see the second example above –REMEMBER: Hamlet is the title of the play AND the name of the main character. When you are referring to the title of the play, italicize the name Hamlet. When you are referring to the name of the character, you do NOT italicize the name.
